Nokia buys Symbian, turns software over to Symbian Foundation

nokia, symbian
Nokia's been in bed with Symbian for many, many years through the development of its S60 platform -- the world's most populous smartphone platform, dont'cha know -- and they're taking that relationship to its endgame today by announcing that they'll be acquiring the remaining shares of Symbian that they don't already own. Here's where it gets interesting, though: rather than taking Symbian's intellectual private for Nokia's own benefit, the goods will be turned over to the Symbian Foundation, a nonprofit whose sole goal will be the advancement of the Symbian platform in its many flavors. Motorola and Sony Ericsson have signed up to contribute UIQ assets, while NTT DoCoMo (which uses Symbian-based wares in a number of its phones) will be donating code as well.

Other Symbian Foundation members include Texas Instruments, Vodafone, Samsung, LG, and AT&T (yep, the same AT&T that currently sells precisely one Symbian-based phone), so things could get interesting. The move clearly seems to be a preemptive strike against Google's Open Handset Alliance, LiMo, and other collaborative efforts forming around the globe with the goal of standardizing smartphone operating systems; the writing was on the wall, and Symbian didn't want to miss the train. Total cash outlay for the move will run Nokia roughly €264 million -- about $410 million in yankee currency.

Update: It's worth noting that the foundation plans to make the entire platform available as open source in the next two years -- "select components" at launch. [engadget]

Nokia N78

Nokia N78, Nokia, N78
Love it or leave it won't do here, we're afraid. Love it or hate it is more like it. There's so much to get excited about with Nokia N78. The excellent display and capable camera, topped with Navi wheel, FM transmitter, GPS and Wi-Fi sure round off a nice deal. And yes, the latest FP 2 is a downright treat. If only… Well, you must know already what we think of the package. Anyway, you're welcome to read on. Nokia N78 has a whole review up ahead to unleash its potential and a lifetime to beg for a facelift.

Key features:

  • 2.4" 16M-color display of QVGA resolution
  • 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash
  • S60 UI with Feature Pack 2
  • FM transmitter
  • Navi wheel
  • 3G with HSDPA
  • microSD card slot, 2GB card in the retail package
  • GPS receiver and 3 months of free voice-guided navigation
  • Wi-Fi
  • Stereo speakers
  • 3.5mm standard audio jack
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Bluetooth and USB connectivity (microUSB port)

Main disadvantages:

  • Keypad or whatever they call it
  • Shaky battery cover
  • Not our kind of design
  • Call, End and C key placement
  • FM transmitter has weak signal

Nokia N78 stacks up just below the top of the multimedia phone market. The megapixel count and screen size are probably the only things to stop it from directly competing with the N95. It is still quite close and even offers a few features that the omnipresent Nseries ruler lacks.

A nice - even if somewhat humble - alternative of Nokia N78 is Samsung i550w. Carrying a very similar feature-pack, it trades the FM transmitter and the Navi wheel for a trackball and a larger 2.6" screen. The best part about the Samsung is that it costs a great deal less than the Nokia N78, retailing at about 260 euro. Now, the FM transmitter and FP 2 are not exactly the first things one would choose to trade, but we can understand those willing to save themselves some money.

Another handset to rival the N78 is Nokia N82. The best cameraphone by Nokia to date is currently available for about 300 euro. The 5 megapixel camera comes with protective cover and Xenon flash, while a built-in accelerometer is also on offer. On the other hand, N82 too lacks the FM transmitter, which might sound as a deal-breaker to some.[gsmarena]

Nokia armed with Google search

Nokia, Google
Nokia has teamed up with Google to facilitate web search on its products and launched models with added new services on Nokia N96, Nokia N 78, Nokia 6210 Navigator and Nokia 6220 classic at Mobile World Congress at Barcelona (February 11-14), while extending the feature to other Nokia mobile for future.

The de customer base of Nokia in over hundred countries will be able to use Google search in days to come with location based navigation services.

Hailing the models launched as mini personal computers Nokia’s Chief Executive Officer Olli Pekka Kallasvuo said, “As we continue to free the internet from the limitations of the desktop, we are taking mobility into a completely new realm of possibility.”

The sets are endowed with personal navigation software that can guide pedestrians with detailed digital maps with movie viewing to video and photo sharing devices.

Nokia Executive Vice President Kai Ostamo, while commenting on its new range of phones, said “We would like to be called Mobile Experience Company and not just a mobile phone company.”

Nokia seems to be high on spirit with this added service and is vying to add more customers. The mobile company through a research by British institute Canalys found that 60% of its users would appreciate GPS enabled function on their mobile phones.

Global Positioning System (GPS) was the most popular development to be discussed at Mobile World Congress, one of the largest exhibitions consisting of over 1200 exhibitors.

GPS-enabled phones will be priced at about 450 euros (Rs 26,000) with additional charges of subscription of the GPS services.

The world first pedestrian phone Nokia 6210 comes with a receiver for GPS network of 24 satellites and integrated compass which will provide accurate information anywhere in the world with local map software.

The Nokia officials with much praises for the navigation services said that this device would help people to explore and discover even the unknown places with much confidence.
