Orange Hints At 3G iPhone Upgrade Scheme

News : Orange Hints At 3G iPhone Upgrade Scheme
After a relative lull we've suddenly been dragged back into the 3G iPhone rumour mill. According to French tech site PCInpact, it claims it has been contacted by Orange about 3G iPhone upgrade schemes that will be offered to existing iPhone owners and current Orange customers.

The first deal is alleged to be of a 'swap' nature with Orange offering to give users the new 3G iPhone in exchange for their current iPhone and a €50 fee. As for standard Orange contractees they will allegedly be offered a "generous" discount to move to the much anticipated handset. Neither Apple nor Orange have yet to respond to the report. Personally speaking however I'm going out on a limb and calling bu11sh1t on this one. After all, it would seem extremely unlikely for such a major telco to go blabbing so close to Steve Job's 9 June opening WWDC keynote. Besides, widespread iPhone licensing agreements have been getting announced for some time suggesting Apple is abandoning exclusive network deals (at least in some countries) while it attempts to make a far greater global impact. With that will come discounts, much as we have seen already from T-Mobile in Germany where the larger price plans reduced the handset cost. So just put 2+2 together...
In related news supposed official 3G iPhone advertising images apparently appeared briefly on Swisscom's website and were hastily removed but not before Greek site iPhone Hellas got some grabs. The shots show a surprisingly thin 3G iPhone in a choice of silver, black and red colours. Again I'm writing this off as publicity seeking, but check out the three shots above to see what you think...?

ViewSonic VX2435wm 24in LCD Monitor

ViewSonic VX2435wm 24in LCD Monitor Review

One can't help but feel slightly ambivalent about ViewSonic. In many regards its monitors have a great pedigree, but it has always suffered in the knowledge that the likes of Samsung, Dell and BenQ seem to punch just a little too high for comfort. But, that's no reason to dismiss ViewSonic out of hand and this 24in LCD has all the raw attributes to be a very good monitor.

As with all monitors of this size it has a 1,920 x 1,200 native resolution, which provides support for 1080p content and allows for two A4 pages to be set side by side at 100 per cent zoom. It uses an 8-bit P-MVA panel, sports a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, claim an 8ms grey-to-grey response time and an excellent 500cd/m2 brightness rating. Connectivity wise there's an HDCP compliant HDMI port, Component, S-Video, Composite, D-Sub and finally a 3.5mm audio jack for the internal speakers. You'll notice one thing missing in this list, DVI. Thus, in the box the VX2435wm comes with a DVI to HDMI cable for a digital connection. In one sense it's quite a smart move, HDMI is obviously a smaller connection though the general trend recently has been for monitors of this size to have an HDMI port in addition to the usual DVI and D-Sub ports.

Given that this monitor has been marketed as an all round workhorse, providing connectivity for your PC, Xbox 360, PS3 and whatever else, then the absence of a DVI port is rather curious. How, one might ask, would one connect a PC and a PS3 at the same time? With difficulty would be the answer, or perhaps by using an HDMI switcher box such as the Belkin Pure AV HDMI 3-to-1 or the AV Tool AVT-5941 Four Port HDMI Switcher. Of course, for the extra money spent on a switcher one could just as easily spend more on a monitor with a separate HDMI port, the stupendous BenQ FP241W springs to mind.
At around £460 online, the VX2435wm is competitively priced compared to the far more expensive BenQ. Moreover, connection considerations aside on paper this a very well specified monitor. Response time is within expectations, but the 500cd/m2 brightness is excellent and while the 1,000:1 Contrast Ratio may not seem astounding it's a genuine figure and not enhanced by any "Dynamic" processing – the value of which is severely debatable. The lack of any USB hub is little disappointing, but not critically so.

Sony Ericsson K770i

Sony Ericsson K770i review
The Sony Ericsson K770i is a blend of both technology and design. The widget is compatible with other devices as well – thanks to the integrated technical know-how. So, file transfer is easy with this high-end device. The mobile can be used to send files to other gadgets with a pin-pointed accuracy by making use of Bluetooth technology or USB ports. This gadget can work on 2G as well as 3G networks and is supported by GSM. This is why my friends claim to access the facilities offered by third generation networks, even if they carry the K770i to distant lands.
The TFT screen is known for its ability to play videos at a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. Thus playing games on this screen is also an alternative for enjoyment and merry-making. I too see people storing beautiful images and wallpapers on the screen. It adds extra glamour to the handset. The memory of the device is sufficient to store images, videos, and wallpapers. One can also store ringtones, images and videos in the whopping memory of the handset. The card slot comes with 256 MB card included. Besides, the phone is supported by a battery that gives 400 hrs of standby time and 10 hr of talktime. The pictures and videos captured with the 3.15 MP camera of this mobile phone can be seen at a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. The same camera can also be used for storing of video files. The other entertainment options are the music player that can play songs on formats such as MP3, AAC, and MPEG4. The handset has a track ID music recognition too. So, one can find out the name of the album and artists of the track that is being played. This phone not just entertains people but gives information about music that are played on it.

FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder 2008-05-24

FFDSHOW is a DirectShow decoding filter for decompressing DivX, XviD, H.264, FLV1, WMV, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, MPEG-4 movies. It uses libavcodec from ffmpeg project for video decompression, postprocessing code from mplayer to enhance visual quality of low bitrate movies, and is based on original DirectShow filter from XviD, which is GPL'ed educational implementation of MPEG4 encoder.

Notes about latest versions of FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder :

  • FFDShow 2008-05-24 (rev. 1972) was compiled by drevil_xxl using GCC 4.1.1 (libavcodec.dll & libmplayer.dll), FFDShow 2008-05-14 (rev. 1960) MMX* was compiled by clsid using ICL9 while FFDShow 2008-05-23 (rev. 1971) SSE** was also compiled by clsid using ICL9.
* Only for CPUs with support for MMX (MultiMedia eXperience) instructions.
** Only for CPUs with support for SSE (Streaming SIMD Extensions) instructions. Check if your CPU has support for SSE or SSE2 instructions using Cpu-Z, a small tool which shows infos about CPU.

First of all, the FFDSHOW consumes way less CPU power than original DivX codecs, even with maximum post-processing. At the same time the post-processing seems to give excellent quality results and allows more configuring than the original DivX 5 codec. It can even automaticly reduce post-processing if your CPU is getting overloaded. The noise filter adds a kind of a rasterising effect to the picture - might be useful in some cases. The alpha version also includes experimental playback for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files (such as VCD and SVCD movies), which works pretty damn well. Only problem is that MPEG-2 playback can't play the SVCD clips directly from the CD, but requires the video to be extracted to the HDD by using VCDGear first.

Features of FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder :

- various compression methods:
  • MPEG 4 compatible (Xvid, DivX 4, DivX 5) using libavcodec or XviD
  • Divx 3 compatible, MSMPEG4v2, MSMPEG4v1
  • WMV1/7, WMV2/8
  • H263, H263+, H264
  • HuffYUV in YV12 colorspace
  • MJPEG
  • MPEG 1
  • Theora (not for regular use, format isn't stabilized yet)
  • MPEG 2 by using mpeg2enc code from MJPEGtools project
  • all Windows Media Video 9 supported encoders with output to asf/wmv file or AVI
- all common encoding modes: constant bitrate, fixed quantizer, fixed quality, two pass encoding (depends on compressor features)
- for libavcodec and XviD detailed selection of motion estimation method
- minimum and maximum I frames interval
- minimum and maximum quantizer selection, quantizer type and trellis quantization selection for libavcodec
- adaptive quantization (aka. masking) for libavcodec and XviD, single coefficient elimination
- selectable compression of starting and ending credits
- two curve compression algorithms for second pass of two pass encoding - thanks to XviD developers
- second pass simulation: although not very precise, still helpful for tweaking advanced curve compression parameters
- ability to use libavcodec internal two pass code
- image preprocessing with ffdshow image filters (latest ffdshow version must be installed)
- graph during encoding: if your encoding program doesn't provide one
- B frames support: from one to eight consecutive B frames
- support for MPEG 4 quarterpel and GMC
- selectable interlaced encoding
- decompression

Changes from FFDShow rev. 1483 to FFDShow rev. 1515 :

- updated libavcodec
- WEB content: Added preliminary German translation of cspOptions.htm + a few fixes to the English version.
- Updated Japanese translations
- Windows Media Center on Vista : temporary fix for some crashes (recent problem)
- 1. YCbCr <-> RGB conversion with color primaries options; 2. Seb.26's level filter (Seb's BTB&WTW)
- updated libavcodec
- Whitelist is now stored as a semicolon delimited string. Now uses 'whitelist' registry value instead of 'useonlyin'. Cleaned up some stuff from past updates to the whitelist.
- added 8 compatible apps
- French translation for new autocrop feature
- 1. Preview version of cspOptions.htm. 2. rename a image
- libavcodec compilation fix for MSVC
- fix YV12 subtitle on MJPEG
- fix some x64 warnings
- ridiculous but more radical fix of rev 1491 issue.
- SSA : fix Default style and *Default issue
- Limit the frame scaling ratio in the AviSynth filter from 1/60 to 60 so a script totally ignoring the input (like "Version()") isn't doesn't skip several thousand frames before producing an image
Comment out lockReceive/unlockReceive DPRINTFs due to them now mostly flooding the debug output
- Workaround for OSD message on Remote API + French translations added on autocrop feature
- minor fix of rev 1485
- update x264
- Autoremove black borders feature (in crop section) : horizontal and vertical bars can now be removed automatically. The algorithm may be improved in the future (some tweaking on parameters)
- temporary fix of vobsub rendering
- SSA/ASS : fix vsfilter compatibility of line height.
- fix vertical scale and fast rendering
- factor out dequant table lookup outside loops, gives a 1-2% speed-up. patch by Andreas Öman %andreas A olebyn P nu%

Important Note :

- Some antivirus software -like AVG- may "detect" a trojan in FFDShow builds. This is a false positive, there are no trojans in FFDShow builds!

Nvidia has two CPU lines

Nvidia has two CPU lines News

NVIDIA IS GOING to release two types of CPUs in the near future. On June 3rd, according to the slides from this week's reviewers day. Luckily as they forgot to invite us, they forgot to NDA us as well so we can tell you all about the Tegra APX 2500 and CSX 600/650 while others can only fume.

ARM11 based system on a chip. This one is aimed at handheld devices in the same way that Atom is.

The chip itself comes in a 144mm2 package, not die, and can do 720p encode and decode at 14MBps. It supports the same last gen features as much of the current GeForce line, can do AA and AF, and will support OpenGL ES 2.0.

The big brother CSX 600 and 650 is aimed at larger machines with screens between handhelds and real laptops. It runs Wince, not XP or Me II because it is not x86, and in general makes you question why they bothered. The chip itself has 256K of L2 cache and can be die stacked to keep the footprint small.

This one runs at 700-800MHz and will support 1080p at 24FPS, not the full 60. It also has hard disk support and can run video in under 3W. If you are keeping track, this is about what Atom can do, but Atom doesn't have that pesky FPS limit.

More information about who is using this will trickle out in the coming week before Computex, and expect a few people to have designs on display there. Given the vast speed advantage Intel has here, you would have to question why people would bother, but, as P. T. Barnum was quoted as saying.
